Five additional organizations approved as probationary RCOs

12/31/2014

MONTGOMERY -- The Alabama Medicaid Agency today announced that five additional organizations have been certified as probationary Regional Care Organizations, joining six groups approved earlier in the month. The newly certified organizations are Alabama Healthcare Advantage, Alabama Healthcare Advantage South, Alabama Healthcare Advantage North, Alabama Healthcare Advantage East and Alabama Healthcare Advantage West. The five groups are seeking to provide medical services to Medicaid recipients throughout the state.

“This is a significant step and represents a substantial amount of work by these applicants,” said Dr. Don Williamson, chair of the Alabama Medicaid Transition Task Force. “We look forward to working with these organizations as we continue to transform our Medicaid program.”

Probationary certification means that the five groups have met initial requirements established by the state including formation of a governing board and Citizens’ Advisory Committee, and development of bylaws, among other stipulations.

The probationary RCOs will now work toward final approval which will require them to demonstrate that they can provide an adequate provider network and have financial solvency to operate a viable program no later than October 1, 2016. The next major deadline, for network adequacy, will be April 1. The financial solvency deadline will be October 1 of 2015.

Regional Care Organizations were created in state legislation passed in 2013 and 2014 to transform Alabama’s Medicaid program into a more efficient and affordable program for the taxpayers of Alabama.
