Alabama Medicaid Lifts Prior Authorization Requirement for Obstetrical Ultrasounds

Effective October 1, 2019, the Alabama Medicaid Agency will no longer require prior authorization for obstetrical ultrasounds. All ultrasounds must be medically necessary with documented medical diagnosis supporting the benefit of the ultrasound procedure.


The October 2019 edition of the Provider Billing Manual, Chapter 28 – Physician, will be updated to reflect the change. Refer to Chapter 28 on October 1, 2019.
