Drug Utilization Review (DUR) Board

Drug Utilization Review (DUR) is designed to improve the quality of pharmaceutical care by ensuring that prescriptions are appropriate, medically necessary and unlikely to result in adverse medical outcomes. Medicaid’s DUR program includes prospective, online and retrospective review as well as use of standards developed by the National Council for Prescription Drug Programs (NCPDP). A board comprised of physicians and pharmacists provides guidance to Agency staff.

  • This is a meeting of Alabama Medicaid’s Drug Utilization Review Board in which Prospective and Retrospective Drug Utilization Review are reviewed.  The DUR program is designed to educate physicians and pharmacists to identify and reduce the frequency of patterns of fraud, abuse, gross overuse, or inappropriate or medically unnecessary care among physicians and pharmacists.

    As the Alabama State of Emergency has been lifted, the July 24, 2024 Drug Utilization Review (DUR) Board Meeting will be held in person at the Alabama Medicaid building in Montgomery, Alabama. Voting Board members must be present to count toward a quorum. A virtual WebEx option will be available on the Medicaid website for the public to attend/observe the meeting, please find the link below.  All meetings of this Committee are open to the public.
