Specialized treatment and related medically necessary services for children in the custody of the Department of Human Resources are often provided at a residential treatment facility. These rehabilitative services include counseling, crisis intervention, case management, assessment and other services.
Implemented in May 1989, the Inpatient Psychiatric Program provides medically necessary inpatient psychiatric services for children under the age of 21. Services must be prior authorized and provided in Medicaid contracted psychiatric hospitals approved by the Joint Commission for Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations.
Inpatient psychiatric services for recipients age 65 or over are covered when provided in a free-standing hospital exclusively for the treatment of mental illness for persons age 65 or over. These services are unlimited if medically necessary and if the admission and continued stay reviews meet the approved psychiatric criteria.
