RE:  Diagnostic Testing Authority for Licensed Marriage Family Therapists
and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Associates

The Alabama Medicaid Agency (Medicaid) will allow Licensed Marriage Family Therapists (LMFT) and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Associates (LMFTA) to conduct diagnostic testing as part of their scope and practice effective May 1, 2025.

This change aligns with efforts to enhance access to mental health services and supports the role of LMFTs and LMFTAs in providing comprehensive behavioral health assessments. Providers should ensure compliance with Medicaid guidelines when conducting and billing for diagnostic testing.

For additional details on documentation, billing procedures, and reimbursement policies, please refer to upcoming updates in the Provider Billing Manual, Chapter 34 or email rebechia.givhan@medicaid.alabama.gov.
