In this 50th
year of Alabama Medicaid, it is appropriate to recognize the contribution of
Commissioner William Holcombe (Hoke) Kerns Sr. who passed away on Sunday, July
12, 2020 at the age of 90. During his two–year service to the Agency beginning
in 1979, he effectively led the program from a $43 million deficit to a $6
million surplus.
Commissioner Stephanie Azar said, "His leadership and legacy positively impacted the healthcare
industry, especially for those who are the most vulnerable in our state. Our
thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Mr. Kerns.”
